Jamaican First-class batsman and West Indies under-19 Skipper Andre Creary stroked an elegant unbeaten 91 while consistent Bajan First Class opener Kraigg Braithwaite made 48 as the 2 most senior batsmen in the West Indies under-19 squad showed form in their first practice match in Guyana yesterday at the DCC ground.
The 20-man West Indies squad is preparing for the Regional One-Day competition which starts in Guyana on Wednesday when they face Barbados in their opening match at Bourda and the practice game was used to get the players accustomed to the Guyanese conditions to prepare the teenagers for a match situation scenario.
The 17-yeart-old Braithwaite struck a typically patient 48 from 89 balls with three fours and a five as Jason Holder’s X1 fell for 155 in 47.2 overs.
The 18-year-old Creary, whom like Braithwaite was a member of the West Indies first Test squad which opposed Bangladesh in July, entertained the small crowd with some delightful shots on the small ground in his unbeaten 91 from 114 balls with 7 fours and 2 sixes to spur his side, chasing a revised total of 216, to 216-5 off 47.1 overs.
Braithwaite, with 2 first class matches for Barbados including one in Guyana this year, looked very solid and was content to work the ball into gaps and rotate the strike with singles and watched as many of his team mates threw their wickets away with injudicious shots on a slow track with some turn for the spinners.
The right-hander, who has been playing at the Regional under-19 level for the past 2 years, was eventually leg before to off-spinner Creary who finished with 3-19 while Yannick Carriah (37) and wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich (31) were the only other batsmen to offer prolonged resistance.
The match began badly when John Campbell (0) was run out with just a single on the board while Yannick Ottley (13) was removed by pacer Nicholson Gordon at 40-2 as Holder’s X1 started badly in sweltering heat.
Holder (0) patted a half-volley from Creary to short extra cover after Carriah had pulled a full toss from the same bowler to deep backward square just when he seemed set for a big score.
Jermaine Blackwood charged down the track to left-arm spinner Jomal Warrican and was stumped for a duck.
When the pint-size Dowrich skied a catch to cover off leg-spinner Dewar at 154-8, the innings ended quickly after that as Warrican (2-37) and Dewar (2-23) supported Creary.
Guyanese Trevon Griffith, the leading scorer in the last TCL regional under-19 series in Jamaica, got the reply going with two boundaries off pacer Kelbert Walters before he pulled a catch to square-leg in the same over to leave to score on 8-1.
Kejel Tyson (28) and Evin Lewis (20) revived the position before they fell to Patrick Harty and Carriah respectively.
Creary who has been playing at the Regional under-19 level since 2006 when he made his debut against Trinidad and Tobago at Bourda, mixed sound defence with attractive stroke-play as the right-hander who represented the West Indies in the last under-19 World Cup in Malaysia showed why he is regarded as the best under-19 batsman in the region.
Dewar showed his all-round worth with 22 while Dalton Polious made 15 before they were both removed by Campbell who took 2-43 from 7.1 overs.
The West Indies under-19s play their 2nd practice game today at the Police ground and the players are also using the Regional tournament as preparation for next year’s under-19 World Cup in New Zealand.
