No medical training institution should be allowed to operate unless it is registered and accredited by the Accreditation Board of the Ministry of Education.
Minister of Health, Dr Leslie Ramsammy, had cause to reiterate this notion yesterday in the wake of reports that an unauthorised medical school has once again resurfaced.
This newspaper had reported extensively on the existence of the school last year which Minister Ramsammy had dubbed a “bogus nursing school.”
The female owner of the school who has been known to use a number of aliases was even taken into police custody following allegations that she had defrauded a number of her students last year.
Reports are that following the police intervention the owner had sought to partially refund some money students had paid for enrolment.
The students were however not aware of their predicament until the Health Minister, through a press conference exposed the skulduggery nature of the owner of the school.
At that forum Dr Ramsammy disclosed his convictions that the owner was engaged in fraudulent activities.
As a result, several of the students enrolled at the school sought to get an explanation from the owner with a view to retrieving monies they had paid for courses.
According to the students, the woman offered a variety of courses, all of which she taught herself at a city location. They also subsequently learnt that the woman had been involved in similar scams previously.
Although the matter has gained the attention of the police and the Director of Public Prosecution, the matter had become hushed until recently when an article was published suggesting that the same school had restarted at another location by the same owner. She is insisting that her operation is legitimate.
Dr Ramsammy, in a statement, yesterday noted, “As Minister of Health, I have had to previously intervene to stop unscrupulous persons from operating “training” schools for nursing and other Allied Health Professions.”
He recounted the dilemma that confronted the scores of students who had paid a substantial amount to enrol at the “illegal school” even as he lamented the fact that a similar school may have started operation.
According to Dr Ramsammy, the Ministry of Health is not aware that any school other than the University of Guyana, the Schools of Nursing of the Ministry of Health at Linden, New Amsterdam and Georgetown, the Ministry of Health’s training Annexe, the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and Davis Memorial Hospital are authorised to provide training in nursing or Foundation Health Courses.
He added that First Aid Courses are conducted by the Salvation Army and the Guyana Red Cross.
“We urge all prospective students to contact the Ministry of Health for guidance when they are considering paying for courses offered by other entities. The Ministry of Health is not opposed to the emergence of new training schools. We welcome these. But they must register and be accredited by the Accreditation Board of the Ministry of Education,” Dr Ramsammy asserted yesterday.
