The Pegasus 40th Anniversary Open Tennis Competition opened last Friday with an impressive ceremony, at the Hotel’s Hardcourts.
Attended by members of the new executive including President Christopher Ram and President of the Guyana Olympic Association K.A. Juman Yassin and sponsor’s representative and Deputy General Manager Susan Isaacs, Ram thanked the Hotel for continuing its commitment to the game even in the face of the global economic difficulties, adding that it clearly demonstrates the Company’s loyalty to the development of the sport.
He called on participants to adhere to the rules that govern the sport, asking them to be guided by the immortal words of the late B.L Crombie who said that “it is not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game that matters.”
He wished all best player and players all the best and urged them to give of their best, but to observe the true spirit of the game.
Yassin, who chaired the ceremony, told the gathering that Ram has embarked on a difficult task, recognising the thorny issues that hinder the sport’s development.
A former President of the entity, Yassin reflected on the pleasant times he had going around the country attending tournaments and promoting the sport.
He also recognised the drop in the level of the game, especially among the Men, adding that it has plummeted appreciably and advised the new executive to work assiduously to arrest the decline.
The GOA Head paid tribute to the role played by parents in helping to prepare their children to participate in the sport.
Tournament co-ordinators Phillip Squires and Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan gave brief remarks on the rules that govern the competition and called on the younger players to co-operate in providing the efficiency the tournament sorely needs.
Isaacs speaking on behalf of the sponsor called on the Organisers to ensure that the tournament is smoothly run and promised her Company’s continued support in the future.
She also promised that they will be urging employees during their November 1 Fun Day to commemorate the Hotels’ Anniversary to get acquainted with the sport and to encourage their children to become involved as well.
Meanwhile in results of matches played on opening night in the Men and Women’s Singles categories respectively.
In Men singles played on Court 1- Phillip Squires made quick work of R. Panday beating him 6-0, 6-0. Squires displayed his dominance as his opponent slipped quickly, dropping service at will.
On Court 2, L. Chapman defeated R. Ramrattan 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 and Oswin Coggins also won.
In what was perhaps the most exciting match of the day, Grace McCalman produced an outstanding performance as she clinched the game from a 13 year old Krystal Sukra 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5. It was no easy work for McCalman, as Sukra played an array of flat ground strokes and angle winners.
A strong and energetic Sukra fought long and hard taking the contest to almost 3 hours even proceeding to a third set. Both players were determined to win, but with McCalman’s years of experience, she displayed patience and intelligence to finish off the match in her favour.
