The Guyana Elections Commissions was up to yesterday briefing the staffers who will be producing the new Identification Cards.
This newspaper was afforded an exclusive tour of the production line where Andrew Chung, GECOM IT Administrator and System’s analyst, and David Coglan, the Project Manager to Guyana’s ID card programme, explained the production process from printing the cards to verification.
The cards are first printed by computer to a special material called teslin which is to the naked eye similar to quality paper but in fact is not paper at all.
Following the printing of the cards, they are then laminated, cut to precision and verified by computers.
According to the duo, there are several security features, some of which are visible and others invisible to the naked eye. For good reason they did not disclose the invisible features.
The production of the close to 500,000 new cards will commence tomorrow and be completed soon thereafter.
GECOM has already taken steps to establish ID cards distribution centres countrywide, and appoint temporary staff to be involved in the production and distribution of these cards.
The ongoing works associated with the production and distribution of ID cards is in compliance with the schedules outlined in the GECOM Microsoft Project Plan for the conduct of Local Government Elections.
