The annual Essequibo Night 2009 event was officially declared open Friday night at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground, after the ceremonial cutting of the ribbon by Prime Minister, Samuel Hinds.
The prelude to the activities that added to the night’s event was the recitation of prayers from the three major religious groups— Hindu, Muslim and Christian, by students of the Essequibo Technical Institute. A student, Sarah Henry, preformed a dramatic poem entitled ‘’Low Carbon Development. ‘’
Region Two Chairman, Ally Baksh welcomed the Prime Minister Hinds and the thousands of Essequibians that attended the annual event.
He reminded Essequibians that the whole concept of Essequibo Night was another opportunity for farmers to showcase their produce. He also referred to the many who look forward to the opportunities. He noted that the event also gave Essequibians another chance to interact with each other.
Prime Minister reminded the large audience that Essequibo Night was intended to “Celebrate Farmers.’’
He also indentified some of the major challenges that farmers encounter, the greatest being the poor supply of water.
The Prime Minister also commended Essequibians for their progress and contribution to national development. He cited their contributions to housing development and in turn the government’s delivery of health and electricity services.
He urged Essequibians to work together, since with this attitude much can be accomplished.
There were approximately 85 booths on display.
Dax Generation Band provided live entertainment and the two-night event climaxed last night.
