A terrified pensioner has moved out of her home after she was beaten, bound and threatened with rape by one of two men who invaded her Parfait Harmonie, West Bank Demerara home early yesterday morning.
Shirley Singh, 61, who lives alone, said that she was punched, choked, bound hand and foot and stripped naked by the intruder, who attacked her as she lay sleeping
The burglar and his accomplice were forced to flee empty-handed since their victim had no cash or jewellery in her home.
However, Singh has since fled her home because the assailant has threatened to return. The victim described her attacker as a tall, thin dark-complexioned man of East Indian ancestry.
Recounting her ordeal, Ms. Singh said that she was awakened around 02:30 hrs yesterday by someone straddling her and squeezing her throat.
Her attacker was a tall, thin man who was wearing a toque. She said that the man began to punch her face and breasts, then used a knife to cut her clothing before stripping her naked.
He then tied her hands and legs with pieces of her own clothing and also stuffed a piece of cloth into her mouth.
Singh said that the intruder, whose accomplice was outside acting as the lookout, began to demand money and jewellery.
The pensioner said that the man threatened to cut off her breasts and also rape her if she did not co-operate.
Eventually the robber stripped off a ring that Singh was wearing, but became furious when he realised that all the pensioner’s jewellery were made of imitation gold.
The robber who was acting as the look-out urged his accomplice to leave. The robber then retreated but warned that he would return with a gun.
Singh said that she eventually managed to free herself and contacted relatives.
According to a relative, some residents appeared to know the intruder and one woman even gave them an accurate description of the man.
The relative said that the attack on Singh reminded her of the still-unsolved murder of 80-year-old Kharpattie Shivnauth, called ‘Ma’, who was found naked, bound and strangled in her La Grange, East Bank Demerara home in August. Shivnauth had also lived alone. The relative said that the community of Parfait Harmonie is plagued by burglars.
Singh, who moved to the area some six months ago, disclosed that her home was burgled before.
She said that she is terrified to return to her home and is staying at relatives.
