A miner in the Mahdia area who pleaded not guilty to drug possession was remanded yesterday, after admitting in a caution statement that the cocaine and marijuana found on a bus in the Aurora area was his.
Gordon Beaton, 47, of Public Road, Suddie was refused bail, by Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson on the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
It is alleged that on October 22, at Aurora, Beaton had in his possession 469grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
It is also alleged that on the same day the accused had in his possession 16.5grams of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
The confused magistrate asked, “Beaton you here again?”
With that she went on to ask the prosecution to state the incident. Police prosecutor, Krishnadat Ramana, told the court that on the day in question police received information and as a result set up a road block on the Aurora Public Road, and eventually stopped minibus BKK 5262.
“ Passengers were asked to disembark with their baggage” Ramana said. Police carried out a search but nothing was found on their person. “Police then searched the bus and found under the second to last seat, a black plastic bag containing cannabis along with a white hard substance which was suspected to be cocaine,” Ramana added.
All the passengers were cautioned and arrested.
“The accused under caution in a written statement admitted that the drugs belonged to him” Ramana said. The magistrate, without hesitation, refused to grant the accused bail and transferred the matter to the Suddie Magistrate’s Court where the accused is expected to appear on November 16.
