– Dragons, GCC Tigers also in contention
With their second win over Old Fort ‘A’, Hikers ‘A’ have secured their place in the men’s first division final of the GT&T National Indoor Hockey Championships which is currently being played, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Hikers continued their impressive run with the 5-2 victory, while GCC ‘A’ have clawed their way back into contention with their second big win over GCC ‘B’, this time by a 7-2 margin.
Hikers enjoyed more success when their ‘B’ unit edged Carib Degenerates 6-5 in a ‘B’ Division match-up and then eased to a comfortable 6-3 triumph over Old Fort in an under-19 encounter, while the young GCC Spartans upset tournament leaders GCC Tigers 2-1 in the ladies competition.
Hikers ‘A’ Jerazeno Bell continued his fine display of skills as he led them admirably in the feature game against Old Fort.
Old Fort went ahead in the 9th minute through some silky stick work by Jason DeSantos, but Bell replied with one of his usual well-placed penalty corner flicks five minutes later. He resumed the scoring in the second half in similar fashion to put the Hikers up by one, before Robert France slipped in a goal of his own in the 34th minute to give them a 3-1 lead.
DeSantos pulled one back for Old Fort two minutes before the end, but their all-out attack to draw even came at a heavy price as Hikers countered effectively, slamming home two more goals in the closing minute from Randy Hope and a second by France.
In the other men’s A division clash, GCC ‘B’ fell victim to their ‘A’ team counterparts for the second time in as many nights.
The ‘B’ team were off to a blistering start this time around, going up by two goals in the opening five minutes through two penalty corners by marksman Shaka Gill.
The patient ‘A’ team, however, never seemed to lose composure and controlled the rest of the game with relative ease as they cruised to a 7-2 victory.
Leading goal-scorer of the competition Dwayne Scott added a hat-trick to his name for GCC ‘A’, while Orland Semple scored a double and Kevin Spencer and Devin Hooper one each.
The Hikers ‘B’ division players signalled strong intentions to wrest the division as they defeated the highly favoured Carib Degenerates by 6-5. Randy Hope was on fire with 4 goals of his own for the Hikers, while Robert France added a double. Rawl Davson led a creditable effort by the Degenerates with a double, while James Mentore, Tristan Gomes and Brian Asregado each netted one.
GCC Spartans got the better of ladies tournament leaders, GCC Tigers when the two teams met earlier in the evening.
Spartans may have surprised all by amassing a 2-0 lead early in the second half after a goalless first half.
Dominique DeGroot and Captain Trisha Woodroffe were on target again for the Spartans, while Tiffany Solomon managed to salvage a goal for the Tigers three minutes from full time.
Hikers’ under-19 easily dispatched their Old Fort counterparts in the duel between the pool leaders.
Aroydy Branford poured in a hat-trick for Hikers, while team-mate Leon Bacchus scored a double and Ryan Primo a single.
Shamar Pemberton, Kurt Thomas and Clarence Edwards each netted one in Old Fort’s losing effort.
Hikers lead the men’s A division pool with 12 points, followed by Old Fort and GCC ‘A’ each on 6, while Western Dragons and Hikers share the top spots in the B division each with 6 points.
GCC Tigers hold onto the lead in the ladies pool with 6 points followed by GCC Spartans on 4 and Hikers with 1. The under-19 division sees Hikers on top with 6 points followed by Old Fort on 3.
The competition was set to resume last evening.
