A new executive has been elected to take up the operational reins of the Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG). The election took place on Wednesday.
Among the new executive body are Mr Paul Stephenson, who was elected President; Mr Paul Waldron, Vice President; Mr Mitra Ramkumar, Treasurer; and Mr Colin Edwards, Mrs Dee George, and Abdoul Ba, Committee members.
Ms Ranata Chuck A Sang is the Immediate Past President. Chuck A Sang is a restaurateur and Manageress of the Dutch Bottle Cafe.
In 1991, when THAG was founded, the current newly elected president, Stephenson, was named as one of the visionaries who realised that Guyana had the potential for the development of a tourism industry.
With over 35 years serving within the international and regional tourism and hospitality industry, Mr Stephenson, is today the CEO and co-founder of the Cara Hotels as well as an experienced hotelier.
The Cara Hotels of Guyana and Trinidad, are owned and managed with his partner, Shaun McGrath, who with Paul, owns and manages hotels, in addition to providing hotel and leisure consultancy services in the hospitality sector in both Guyana and regionally.
Elected Vice President, Waldron, joined the tourism industry as a member of Team Discover Tours of the Tower Hotel.
He next moved on to managing the Timberhead Rainforest Resort until 2001 when he started his Inbound Tour Operation – Out door Expeditions.
This operation was later expanded to include training. In 2008, Waldron joined Iwokrama as the Tourism Consultant tasked with managing and improving the operations related to the Field Station and Tourism Unit.
To date, he has worked over 12 years within the industry, providing guidance and support to the Tourism Studies Programme of the University of Guyana sharing his knowledge and practical experiences acquired over the years within the industry.
Ramkumar, as the elected Treasurer trained by the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) and Certified Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA ) within the areas of Book-keeping and Accounts (Level 2).
The three elected committee members are also very well academically endowed. George is the Owner/Managing Director of the Herdmanston Lodge. She holds a Bachelors of Science in Economics, and is mother of three.
Colin Edwards was educated at Westminster School and Suttleworth Agricultural College in England and is a former V.S.O. to Guyana where he worked as an Agricultural Extension Officer.
In 1998, Mr. Ba joined the Correia Group of Companies as the Sales and Marketing Manager.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Tourism from the University of Sao Paulo, Brasil and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Foreign Languages; Majoring in French and English Languages.
Ms Treina F. Butts is Executive Director of THAG.
She joined the THAG Secretariat on August 4, 2008 as the Executive Director/ Company Secretary. Prior to her appointment she worked with the Guyana Tourism Authority from October 2003 to August 2008 as the Senior Marketing Officer.
