In their typical dynamic fashion by 3-1 margin, the Hikers ‘A’ knocked the wind out of Old Fort ‘A’ in their men’s first division clash Wednesday evening in the GT&T National Indoor Hockey Championships being played at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
GCC ‘A’ outclassed their ‘B’ team counterparts 9 – 5 in the other ‘A’ division matchup while the Western Dragons dispatched Old Fort ‘B’ with a 4-2 beating in the men’s B division. In the lone ladies fixture, the Hikers drew 2-2 with the GCC Spartans while the under-19 boys contest of the same clubs, resulted in a 5-3 win for the Hikers.
With the two teams been unbeaten going into feature match of the evening, Hikers managed to draw first blood through their cornerstone Jerazeno Bell who converted a penalty stroke in the 13th minute.
Bell would register his second high in the left side of the Old Fort net from a penalty corner two minutes later while a brilliant counterattack from Old Fort’s Aderemi Simon produced the lone Old Fort goal of the half.
The second half saw the majority of possession belonging to the Hikers as they seized control of the match but would only muster one more goal through Shane Samuels in the 22nd minute to pull of the 3-1 victory.
GCC ‘A’ maintained the respect of their junior counterparts, the GCC ‘B’, with a 9-5 drubbing giving the ‘A’ side its first win of the competition so far.
Both sides have been struggling in the tournament but the high-scoring affair may signal a change to come in the second round. Devin Hooper topped the scoreboard with a hat-trick for GCC ‘A’ while teammates Kevin Spencer, Alan Fernandes and Dwayne Scott each added doubles. Leonard George and Stuart Gonsalves scored two each for the B side and Shaka Gill added a single.
The Western Dragons men cruised to a comfortable victory over Old Fort ‘B’ by 4-2 placing them on top of the points table in the men’s B division. Deon Carew scored a double for the Dragons who also enjoyed singles from Trason Corbin and Deon Branford. Jason DeSantos and Michael Hawke were the goalscorers for Old Fort.
The ladies matchup of the evening saw the Hikers come from behind once again to even the scores against GCC Spartans who played with maturity beyond their years.
Dominique DeGroot was first onto the score sheet with a field goal just two minutes in while Trisha Woodroffe added GCC’s second from a 16th minute penalty corner. Just when all seemed lost for the Hikers, national striker Cora Towler tied the score in the 27th and 28th minutes from a penalty corner and the field respectively to leave the game even at 2 a piece.
Favourites in the boys under-19 competition, Hikers, came from behind to pull off the win against GCC in the division’s lone fixture. While GCC’s team-leaders Stephen Xavier, with 2 goals and Eric Hing with 1 made a gallant effort, the all-round firepower for the Hikers were too much to handle as they chalked up 5 goals of their own through Aroydy Branford, Ryan Primo, Andrew Stewart, Michael Harding and Leon Bacchus.
At the end of the men’s A division first round, Hikers lead the table with 9 points, Old Fort sit in second with 6, GCC’A’ follow with 3 and GCC ‘B’ remain without points. The B division sees Western Dragons in the lead with 6 points followed by the Hikers on 3 while the Degenerates and Old Fort share the cellar.
The ladies division show the GCC Tigers on top with 6 points followed by Hikers and Spartans both with 1 point each.
In the under-19 tournament, Hikers and Old Fort share the top position with 3 points each while GCC is yet to score.

Hikers vs Old Fort – Under-19
Spartans vs Tigers – Ladies
Degenerates vs Hikers – 2nd div
GCC “A” vs GCC “B” – 1st div
