Shiv, Sars, Gayle on show in ‘double header’ at Providence today
By Sean Devers
The Guyana selectors yesterday named National under-19 player Jonathon Foo and Essequibo all-rounder Delon Heyliger in a 15-man Guyana squad for the 4-team 2-day Guyana Cricket Board 20/20 cricket Festival at the Guyana National Stadium from today.
The 18-year-old Berbician Foo and the 19 year-old Heyliger who played at the Regional under-19 level last year, are the only players without National senior team experience in the squad which also sees the re-call of former Test leg-spinner Mahendra Nagamootoo.
West Indies Test players Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Sewnarine Chattergoon and Travis Dowlin have all been included in the side which will oppose Barbados from 16:00hrs today in their opening game after the Chris Gayle led Jamaicans and the United Chargers from the USA play in the first game today from 14:00hrs.
West Indies ODI player Royston Crandon and his brother Esuan Crandon who represented the West Indies in the Sixes tournament in Hong Kong 3 years ago, are also in the side which also includes Wicketkeeper Derwin Christian, who like Nagamootoo was not picked for their counties for the Inter-County tournament.
Consistent left-hander Assad Fudadin, all-rounder Chris Barnwell, left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul and his former West Indies under-19 teammate Steven Jacobs are the other players in the squad which has no room for National player Deon Ferrier who has been enjoying a good local season with the bat and who had 2 consecutive bad umpiring decisions in the trial matches.
Today’s two winners will clash in the final tomorrow at the same venue after the 2 losers face each other in the 3rd place play-off.
After the final, which will be played under lights, a Chutney/Soca Concert will be held and all proceeds from today and tomorrow will go towards Guyana’s cricket development.
Sarwan will captain the Guyana side with Chattergoon as his deputy and tickets to see the 2 matches today cost $1,000.
The squad to play in the Regional One-Day competition which starts on October 28 is expected to be selected tomorrow evening.
In yesterday’s 20/20 practice match at Everest, Jacobs’ X1 beat Sarwan’s X1 by 10 runs after Chanderpaul (51) and Dowlin who was asked to retire on 35, added 121 for the first wicket on a slow track as Jacobs’ X1 reached 163-5 off their 20 overs.
Barnwell chipped in with 30 while Deonarine fell to Nagamootoo for one and Royston Crandon was dismissed by his brother for 15.
Nagamootoo took 2-28 and Esuan Crandon 2-32 for Sarwan’s X1 who reached 153-6 when their 20 overs expired.
Foo made an unbeaten 27 while Sarwan (24), Richard Ramdeen (21), Ferrier (20), Shemroy Barrington (15) and Christian (10*) were the other batsmen to reach double figures as Permaul took 3-24 and Royston Crandon had 2-20.
The Guyana 20/20 team read:- Ramnaresh Sarwan (Captain), Sewnarine Chattergoon (V/Capt), Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Narsingh Deonarine, Travis Dowlin, Chris Barnwell, Royston Crandon, Esuan Crandon, Derwin Christian, Mahendra Nagamootoo, Steven Jacobs, Assad Fudadin, Veerasammy Permaul, Jonathon Foo, Delon Heyliger.
