Dear Editor,
As a resident of the New Diamond Housing Scheme, it is becoming clear that the powers that be never envisaged the explosive growth of the area.
With 8,000 new homes springing up and now banks, gas station and a mall going up, policy makers must be clapping themselves on the back.
However, development has come at a price for the area. Just take a look every morning between the hours of 7-9 and it is hell.
The traffic buildup can go as far as Craig and stretch along the Diamond public road. The lone access road into the new schemes, both Grove and Diamond, is jammed with traffic every morning.
Just try calling a taxi around that time. In addition, traffic ranks have their hands full every morning in their attempts to maintain order.
I understand that Government is now attempting to ease the situation by building a parallel access road through the new schemes and possibly run it between the new banks and gas station.
However, it is my feeling that the situation may very well be compounded since in addition to more police ranks, there will be the added congestion of stopping vehicles again to allow others to pass.
Maybe, the authorities need to rethink their strategies and look further north to the Prospect area, or even further. You see, traffic coming out of Diamond can use a back road that will take them out to Prospect or further. Of course, the intricacies of getting the money and land to build the road will have to be worked out by Government.
I don’t believe it is too late to rethink running a parallel road through the Diamond area. It may cost some more money, but it may be wiser.
