Strongest men & women to collide at CASH on Sunday
By Franklin Wilson
Beverage giants Banks DIH Ltd through its newest product, Power Stout has continue to show confidence in the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPF) by sponsoring this Sunday’s Senior Championships which will take place at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Announcing the sponsorship package yesterday was Sales Consultant (Power Stout & Premium Beer) Michael Fung who said it was an absolute pleasure for Banks DIH to be supporting the sport yet again. Fung noted that Power Stout is synonymous with Power and Powerlifting and it was the first time they were sponsoring the senior championships under this brand. Last year’s seniors were sponsored by Guinness ‘Reach for Greatness”.
“At Banks DIH you know we are always committed to sports and come Sunday we are expecting great things from the athletes competing. We had a talk with our top executives and President of the GAPF and we will be involved with the Caribbean Powerlifting Championships in March 2010.”
Powerlifting in Guyana has grown leaps and bounds over the past two years and come Sunday, the senior Championships is expected to be the biggest ever with male and female athletes from Linden, Berbice and Georgetown vying for top prizes and a place on Guyana’s team for the Caribbean tournament, next year.
Headlining Sunday’s event will be Caribbean and International king ‘Big’ John Edwards who will be attempting to break into the 800 squatting club competing in the 125kg / 275 lbs class. Last year, even though he was not 100% fit, Edwards set a new squat record of 749.25lbs erasing his previous mark of 743.75 achieved in 2005.
Also expected to heat up the Sports Hall are Caribbean and North American Champion Randolph Morgan who has enjoyed a bumper year on debut at the Regional and International levels. Morgan was also the best lifter at last year’s seniors. Mervin ‘Spongy’ Moses will also seek to hold his own.
Berbician athletes, Vijay Rahim (52kg – 114lbs category) and Bhojkumar Jagnarine (open 75kg – 165lbs class) who both set new deadlift records in 2008 will be back and even stronger.
Farouk Abdul, Paul Adams, Andrew Adams, Theodore Henry, Errol ‘Big man’ Henry, Ade Thomas, Kelvin Lewis and Wazeem Immamdeen are other athletes to look out for on Sunday.
Weigh in time on Sunday commences at 07:30hrs and ends at 09:00hrs. Athletes who fail to make this time will not be allowed to compete according to the GAPF. Competition time is 10:00hrs. The rules of the Regional and International Federations will be stringently applied and athletes are asked to take note. Meanwhile, General Secretary of the North American Powerlifting Federation Robert Keeler and International Powerlifting Federation Referee Michael Licciardi were expected in Guyana last evening for a short visit and to conduct a seminar and certification for national referees. This seminar will take place at the Princess Hotel Providence beginning at 09:00hrs today.
The officials are expected to witness Sunday’s championship at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall which they will also check to ensure that it is up to the standard for next year’s Regional competition.
