A 19-year-old labourer of Felicity, East Coast Demerara, was treated at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Wednesday night for a gunshot wound to his knee which he sustained when a bandit attacked him.
Ravin Mangroo was shot about 21:15 hours when he refused to hand over his cellular phone to the bandit despite the gun that was placed to his head.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that Mangroo was talking to someone on his cellular phone while sitting on his bicycle at Pulwarie Street, Better Hope when the bandit came up and placed the gun to his head.
The man demanded his cellular phone and Mangroo quickly stashed it in his pocket and attempted to resist his attacker.
He told police that at the time he had suspected that the weapon might have been a fake.
The man discharged a round hitting him in the knee causing him to fall from his bicycle. The bandit then rummaged through his pants pocket and took the cell phone before riding away with the instrument.
The wounded labourer was taken to the Sparendaam Police Station where he reported the matter before being escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was treated and sent away.
In the wake of the shooting the police visited the scene but after questioning several persons, they did not manage to gather any useful information.
