A 41-year-old baker was knifed to death last evening during a brawl with a teenager in Adelaide Street, Charlestown.
Damon Witherspoon, succumbed in the Georgetown Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Unit around 20:00 hrs from a stab wound that pierced one of his lungs.
The killer fled the scene leaving his bicycle behind. He was still at large up to press time.
According to reports, Witherspoon was standing in Adelaide Street when a cousin and the suspect came up. An eyewitness said that the cousin, who had a small quantity of drugs in his hand, stopped to talk with Witherspoon, while, the suspect became impatient and wanted to leave to sell scrap metal.
However, Witherspoon cautioned the cousin to get rid of the drugs before he left since he could “get a three year” if he was caught.
This reportedly annoyed the suspect, who began to argue with Witherspoon, who responded by slapping him.
Eyewitnesses said that the man then drew a knife but backed off when Witherspoon picked up a rock.
He left the scene but returned “well dressed”, and confronted Witherspoon who again picked up a rock to defend himself.
However, an eyewitness said that the baker then dropped the rock, giving the attacker the opportunity to lunge at him with the knife.
After stabbing Witherspoon, the suspect then dropped his bicycle and fled.
A sister of the victim said that she was at the back step, when she heard her brother groaning. She then observed that he was spitting blood.
She then took him to the GPHC, where staffers tried valiantly to save his life. He eventually succumbed about two hours later.
The dead man’s mother, Jean Witherspoon, told Kaieteur News that she was in her house when she heard a commotion outside.
“Was some confusion with he and a boy. I see like he lash the boy,” she said.
Witherspoon said that her son had been drinking and was trying to protect a relative from his attacker.
She said that the attacker left and returned a short while later and stabbed her son.
“He come at the step and call. My daughter- in-law go out and then my daughter run out and she see he and carry he at the hospital,” Mrs. Witherspoon stated.
She said that her son, who was the third of her seven children, was not a problem to anyone.
