Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Dr. Tota Mangar, has called on students to “value the learning they have received through the Wakenaam Computer Centre” and to do something for their community by making a contribution to this community “that has given you so much”.
Dr. Mangar was at the time delivering the feature address at the third graduation ceremony of the Wakenaam Computer School held on Saturday last at the Wakenaam Masjid Annex, Wakenaam.
In his motivational speech to more than 60 graduates among the other officials, parents and well-wishers of the school, he congratulated the students and the school for “helping to develop the country”.
He was in high praise for Muslim Aid of London, the funding agency of the school, which was opened in 2006. Dr. Mangar pledged the continued support of the University of Guyana, through its outreach programme.
He complimented the Management Board of the school for such wonderful work. Also present at the ceremony was Manager of the University of Guyana’s Information Technology Center, Raymond Khan, who expressed his profound satisfaction at the work of the school.
He expressed his pleasure at being able to be associated with such a noble project. He urged the inclusion of Computer repairs as a course taught at the school, to train persons on the island to diagnose and fix computers on the island, rather than having to travel great distances to get it repaired.
Secretary of the Muslim Youth League of Guyana (MYL) Hakeem Khan, through which the school was established, spoke of the need for the students to now contribute to the society using their newly earned skills.
President of Wakenaam Masjid and Chairman of the Wakenaam NDC, Mr. Zakir Khan, stated that computers have become an integral part of our world and those refusing to access it will be left in poverty.
The programme also saw attendance from prominent businessman and a member of the management of the school, Mr. Hakeem Mohamed, other University of Guyana officials and MYL officials.
