Shattaville Masters defeated Rangers Masters in a nail biting finish when the two teams faced off in the first semi-finals match in the Over-40 category for the Wellman Trophy in the Mike Pharmacy Tapeball cricket competition at Leonora Primary School Ground Sunday morning last.
The winning team has now qualified for the final and awaits the decision of the other semi-final match between Industry Super Kings and Trophy Stall Masters this Sunday to determine their opponents in the final.
Early morning showers had left the pitch moist and after winning the toss, Shattaville invited Rangers to take first strike.
The decision was justified when the two openers were sent back with merely 10 runs on the board. Rangers recovered somewhat with a fourth wicket stand of 60 between Wazir Ali (20 not out) and Davenand Bissoon (27) which took them to a respectable total of 164 all out in 24.4 overs. Lakeram Persaud (3-22 from 5 overs) was the best bowler for Shattaville with support from Rampersaud Sankar (2-16 from 5 overs).
Shattaville feared no better than their challengers at the start of their innings, as the pitch was still wet. They lost 4 wickets within 40 runs but a fighting unbeaten 54 by Lallbachan Babulall supported by 18 from Greg Persaud saw them to the winning total of 165-9.
Babulall was dropped when his team needed 10 more runs. Had the catch been taken Rangers Masters would have gained an unlikely victory.
However, to compound matters, the ball landed over the boundary line. The date for the final would be announced shortly.
