Home Affairs Minister, Clement Rohee, says that one of the masterminds in the burning of the Ministry of Health building is based in the United States.
On Tuesday, the Minister said that there are telephone records to substantiate this claim. He said that Government is in receipt of the telephone number and address of the individual in the United States who made calls to Guyana during the same time of the fire.
Rohee said that he views the deliberate torching of the Ministry as an act of domestic terrorism and that through the local law enforcement authorities approaches were made to the US to provide as much information about the individual so that possible prosecution and closure can be brought to the matter.
However, the Minister is not satisfied with the level of cooperation shown by the United States authorities. “So far we have not got any response from the US authorities, and I find this very disturbing.”
Rohee believes that the US authorities ought to be more cooperative just as the Guyana Government has assisted that country in the past whenever they were approached to render assistance on similar issues.
And Rohee believes that the police ought to be more assertive in investigating such matters. He wants the approach by the police to be the same when dealing with all matters and getting things done.
The fire, believed to have been sparked by channa bombs, completely destroyed the Ministry of Health’s main building and an annex at Brickdam in the wee hours of July 16.
It devoured records, vehicles and a string of key divisions in a major blow to the health sector, according to the administration.
A number of persons were rounded up for questioning in connection with the fire. Former Chief Magistrate Juliet Holder Allen was among them.
Back then the police had said they were reliably informed that the former Chief Magistrate’s vehicle was used to transport some of the arsonists and items used to ignite the fire.
