It was another night of success for the in-form Hikers and Old Fort ‘A’ division teams as once again they both upstaged GCC and seems destined to meet in the final of the GT&T National Indoor Hockey Championships being played, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall. Hikers ‘A’ managed a goal in the dying minutes to remain unbeaten with an enthralling 5-4 victory over GCC ‘A’, while Old Fort ‘A’ who are also yet to drop a game put in a solid performance against GCC ‘B’ with a comfortable 4-1 win. In other results, Hikers beat Old Fort 6-1 in a ‘B’ Division clash, while Old Fort edged GCC 2-1 in an under-19 encounter and GCC Tigers gave their club its only win of the night after squeezing past Hikers 3-2.
The much hyped feature match of the evening seemed destined to be a one-sided affair after the first 5 minutes as Hikers dominated GCC and easily chalked up 2 goals in the 2nd and 3rd minutes of the match through the nippy Robert France and Captain Devin Munroe.
It took some 10 minutes for GCC to finally get their act together and raise the quality of their game to match the aggressive Hikers.
In the 18th minute, GCC finally struck gold when defensive dynamo Dwayne Scott slammed home a penalty corner strike.
Hikers responded with a penalty corner of their own, however, in the final minute of the half as Munroe registered his second in the identical manner to Scott, giving Hikers a 3-1 lead at the half.
The game had balanced itself out in the latter minutes of the first half and the second half belonged to GCC as the Bourda boys registered their second goal through a brilliant Devin Hooper one-handed effort.
Hooper, however, missed a penalty stroke one minute later in an effort to draw his team even, and Munroe again answered by completing his hat-trick off a penalty corner. Dwayne Scott and Orland Semple made good on GCC’s efforts to stay in the game as they drove in two more goals from a penalty corner in the 29th minute and a field goal in the 30th respectively to draw the scores even at 4-4.
Just when the game seemed to be ending on a stalemate, however, Hikers Shane Samuels made a diving steal and let fly his shot high into the roof of the net as he fell to the floor in spectacular fashion to hand his team a hard fought win.
In the other ‘A’ division match, Old Fort ‘A’ were clearly the better of the two sides as they dismissed GCC’B’.
While GCC had their moments, they made too many unforced errors to seriously threaten Old Fort’s grasp. Askofu Simon led all scorers with a double, while team-mates Aderemi Simon and Dwayne Alleyne scored one each.
Shaka Gill was the lone respondent for GCC.
Earlier in the evening, the newly introduced under-19 division saw its first match of the tournament with Old Fort defeating GCC 2-1 in a closely-matched battle.
Kevin Melville and Delon Lewis scored for Old Fort, while Stephen Xavier netted for GCC. Flora GCC Tigers upstaged Hikers in the ladies match-up of the night by running away with a 2-0 lead at the half, including a goal in the opening 10 seconds of the game.
As GCC eased the pedal, Hikers clawed their way back into the game, but the encounter ended at 4-3 in favour of GCC.
Kerensa Fernandes scored a hat-trick for the Tigers, while her sister Sonia Jardine nailed the other. Veteran Cora Towler scored a double for the Hikers and Shundell Durant a single.
