A Guyana Defence Force driver was remanded to prison on Tuesday for causing death by dangerous driving after he was involved in an accident, which resulted in the death of Enid Sharpe.
Lance Corporal Delroy Mitchell, 24, of Third Street, Alberttown, was refused bail yesterday when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson to answer the charge of cause of death by dangerous driving.
On May 22 at Amelia’s Ward the Lance Corporal, a father of two and who expects a third child in a month’s time, drove DFD 1469 in a manner dangerous to the public and as a result caused the death of Enid Sharpe.
Mitchell, who pleaded not guilty to the charge, was represented by Attorney at Law Melissa Stewart, who in a bail application told the court that her client had no previous brushes with the law and as a member of the force and being well disciplined, he would appear in court.
However, Prosecutor Kevin London said that the accused collided with motorcycle CE 3406 which Sharpe was riding. The woman fell off the motorcycle and sustained serious injuries.
“She was pronounced dead on arrival at the Mackenzie Hospital. It was reported that the accused was driving at a fast rate”.
The Magistrate refused bail and transferred the matter to the Christianburg Magistrate’s Court where the accused is expected to appear today.
