Sussan Simon receiving the scholarship cheque from Weygand Gardner, Director of All God’s Little Children, INC.
The dedication and commitment shown by a young woman of Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara, has landed her a scholarship to complete her Bachelors Degree in Communication at the University of Guyana.
Susan Simon, 23, was awarded the scholarship by the Guyana Association of Georgia after, Weygand Gardner, the Director and founder of the non-governmental United States-based organisation All God’s Little Children; made successful representation on the young woman’s behalf.
The scholarship is worth US $3,300 over the three-year period.
He explained that Simon had already completed her First Year studies after acquiring a student loan from the University of Guyana. The man said the condition for the continued funding of Simon’s programme is dependent on her maintaining an overall B grade and she should be involved in the work of a charitable organisation.
The former Miss Ann’s Grove and the reigning Miss East Coast Demerara lost her mother to a sudden stroke in 2002. Simon said she met Gardner as she was doing voluntary work for kids’ television and their relationship has grown since then. She said Gardner was always interested in a person’s academic pursuits and it was during one of those conversations that the thought of acquiring a scholarship for her was mooted.
Gardner said that he was particularly moved by the success of the young woman despite her difficult childhood. He explained that she lived with her grandmother, Janet Simon, and other relatives in an extended family setting but was still able to rise above those and other challenges.
In the process she achieved seven CSEC subjects with good grades. For him, this was a sign that the young woman had a bright future. He said such a scholarship was the first to be awarded to a Guyanese resident in Guyana.
All God’s Little Children, INC, a Christian non governmental organisation has been operating in Guyana since 2000 through 35 churches and organisations.
