Chanderpaul to play in 20/20 warm up game today at Everest
By Sean Devers
Guyana’s latest Test player Travis Dowlin stroked an accomplished 70 and got support from Chris Barnwell (50) and ODI player Royston Crandon (41) as Assad Fudadin’s XI beat Steven Jacobs XI by 31 runs at Bourda yesterday in the final 50 overs practice game before the Guyana side is selected today for the Regional One-Day competition. The 32-year-old Dowlin who fell 5 short of his maiden Test ton against Bangladesh in July in only his 2nd Test after being drafted into the regional side due to the strike of the senior players, batted like a West Indies player on a flat track to reach the boundary 6 times and clear it once, as Fudadin’s XI reached 207-9 in 40 overs.
Barnwell and Royston Crandon offered support to Dowlin as Esuan Crandon took 3-25 and West Indies ‘A’ team pacer Brandon Bess 2-30 for Jacobs’s XI who fell for 176 as out of favour West Indies left-hander Leon Johnson top scored with 34.
No other batsman, including prolific world rated Test player Shivnarine Chanderpaul, who fell for 2, passed 25 as former Guyana under-19 player Delon Heyliger, who induced the experienced Chanderpaul to edge a back foot drive to the Keeper, took 3-36 and got support from Royston Crandon who picked up 2-41.
The National training squad, minus Test batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan who was expected home today, will participate in a 20/20 practice match today at the Everest ground before the teams to play in the Regional 50-over series, which starts in Guyana on October 28 and the 4-team 20/20 cricket Festival at the Stadium tomorrow and Saturday is selected.
Yesterday West Indies ‘A’ Skipper Sewnarine Chattergoon, one of the players reportedly not given retainer contracts by the WICB, fell to Esuan Crandon before Fudadin’s XI had scored.
But Dowlin who averages 69.77 from 6 ODIs, batted enterprisingly and along with his DCC teammate Barnwell, who struck 3 fours and a six from 62 balls in his 50, batted well after the in-form Narsingh Deonarine was well caught at backward point by Shemroy Barrington; cutting at Esuan Crandon for 8.
Royston Crandon, the only member of the makeshift West Indies team which toured South Africa to reportedly not get a WICB retainer contract, then hit 4 fours and 2 sixes in his cameo 37-ball 41 on the rough outfield to help his team past the 200 mark.
A handful of spectators watched as Barrington (25) and former West Indies under-19 opener Richard Ramdeen (24) gave Jacobs’s XI a good foundation before Barnwell removed Ramdeen and Barrington was run out.
Heyliger got rid of the dangerous Chanderpaul while Royston Crandon sent back Johnson and ex-West Indies youth left-hander Gajanand Singh (24) while Jacobs (18) was unfortunate to be adjudged run out.
National under-19 player Jonathon Foo (16) was caught and bowled by Heyliger as a big drive rebounded from the batsman’s foot and Derwin Christian lofted the 4th ball he faced to long-on to fall to leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo before he had scored.
For the second day in a row, First-Class player Deon Ferrier (1) seemed unfortunate to be given caught off his forearm. Yesterday he was taken by the Keeper, Delbert Hicks on the 2nd attempt as he pulled at a bouncer from Heyliger with the Keeper ‘standing up’.
Deonarine then got rid of Nagamootoo (6) in the penultimate over as the innings closed. The 35-year-old Chanderpaul, who joined the training squad for the first time yesterday after completing his contract with English side Durham last month, wasted little time in getting some additional practice as he joined the GCC nets for a knock just after the game.
With 8,576 runs and 21 centuries from 121 Tests and 10 ODI tons and 51 First-Class hundreds including a ‘double’ in his last innings last month, Chanderpaul, a First-Class player for 19 years, could have opted to rest after yesterday’s game but his love for batting and his desire to improve his game was exhibited as he put his pads on to bat in the nets as soon as the practice match was over. Johnson also practiced in the GCC nets with Chanderpaul yesterday.
Guyana face Barbados under lights after Jamaica battle the United Chargers from the USA in tomorrow’s double header at Providence in the GCB 20/20 Festival and a good size crowd is expected today at Camp Road to see Chanderpaul bat in today’s 20/20 practice game.
