Six groups are currently engaged in intense campaigning for the coveted seat of President as the University of Guyana Student’s Society (UGSS) gears up for elections scheduled for the Turkeyen Campus on November 4, next.
Elections would then move to the Tain Campus for that leg of voting on November 6 before returning to the Turkeyen Campus for elections among students in the Education Faculty one day later.
Whichever way the election goes, a President would lead the UGSS for the next academic year. Outgoing President Jason Benjamin is ineligible for the post.
Benjamin revealed that he has since completed his tenure at the University and is preparing to move on to other vocations.
However, he remains adamant that the UG would always hold a special place in his heart. Towards this end, Benjamin and his other colleagues that comprised the now defunct Standard Bearers Party are in the process of forming a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) group that would attempt to access adequate funding from international donor agencies for a University of Guyana Student Complex.
Benjamin told Kaieteur News that the group has targeted the 50th anniversary for the completion of this project.
Benjamin holds the distinction of being the longest serving president in the history of the UGSS after successfully acceding to office for the 2003/04 academic year.. He has since completed reading for a degree in civil engineering.
Benjamin said that he is extremely fortunate to have been an integral part of the University of Guyana decision-making process. He said that while he enjoyed every moment of his tenure, he still feels that there was much that he was unable to accomplish.
He feels obliged to offer some advice to his successor. “The elected president should realize that he holds an awesome responsibility to help shape the lives of those that venture into the hallowed halls of university life. That person must be willing to offer selfless service to all students that ventures into the UG.”
The outgoing president is very optimistic that his successor would be able to make a distinct difference on student life at campus with the right kind of application.
Two of the most popular parties contesting for the position are the Revolutionary Party, led by Shepard Duncan and The Student’s Factor, led by Tiffiny Daniels.
