A self-professed trader was yesterday granted bail by acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson at the Georgetown Magistrates’ court on charges of fraudulent conversion.
It is alleged that during September 26 to October 10, Clayton Allen, 49, of 179 South Better Hope, hoodwinked Sabrina Mc Allister of 900 pounds of chicken.
Mc Allister claimed that the accused, while pretending that he was working at Caricom, proposed the idea of selling her chickens to the Caricom snackette. “He even provided documents apparently being Caricom letterheads,” Mc Allister added.
Mc Allister saw the proposal to be profitable and made the necessary arrangements for the accused to collect the 900 pounds of chicken.
However, Mc Allister became skeptical of the transaction, when the accused didn’t turn up with the proceeds that were prearranged to be handed over in the matter of two weeks.
It was also reported that the accused told the virtual complainant that he was having a “rough spell”. In good nature, the virtual complainant went along with the proposal to help a friend of many years.
Leslie Sobers, appearing for Clayton, stated that it was his client’s contention to pay McAllister what was owed to her. However the deal suffered a setback, causing the delay in payments.
In relation to the alleged forged Caricom letterheads, Sobers stated that an investigation is still ongoing to ascertain its authenticity. “In light of this, I request that my client be granted bail,’ Sobers told the magistrate.
Police prosecutor Krishnadat Ramana, requested that bail be denied, due to the high incidence of such offences. “The accused also has other matters of the same fraudulent nature pending in other courts,” Ramana added.
The accused was granted bail of $250,000 and ordered to make another court appearance on November 20.
