Merely two weeks into the 2009/10 academic year, the University of Guyana kicks off its sports season with the inter-faculty Athletics championships slated for Friday October 30 at the GDF Sports Ground Ayangana, Thomas Lands.
Sports administrator of the UG, Seivewright Benjamin disclosed that the University is now in the interregnum period (the period between elections of office bearers for the position of UGSS President).
He said that he is currently coordinating activities with the administrators of the respective faculties in the mobilization process. He said that he is heartened by the response as most of the students are excited that the championships are finally being run off after a short hiatus.
The last major event staged by the UG was the inter-faculty basketball and table tennis competition early last year. Natural Science has dominated these championships, carting off the honours in 2 of the last 3 tournaments. Benjamin said that while this faculty has always fielded a strong team, much is expected from the Agriculture and the Technology faculties which are putting up strong teams bent on winning.
Benjamin also said that officials in his department are currently putting the mechanisms in place for other competitions later this year. These include the inter faculty basketball, football and cricket competitions.
