After a lengthy hiatus of some three years, the East Bank Football Sub Association (EBFSA) has launched its Division one Super League and play is expected to get underway shortly.
The launching ceremony took place at the Beterverwagting offices of Beverage Giants, Ansa McAl, who incidentally are the main sponsors of the tournament under the Stag Power Stout brand. Several teams would be vying for honours and include Yarrowkabra, Kuru Kuru Lions, Grove, Timerhi, Mocha Champs, Agricola, Riddim Squad, Soesdyke, Kuru Kururu Warriors and Hi Tech.
Several top executives of Ansa McAl attended the ceremony and included Brands Manager John Maikoo and Public Relations Officer, Darshanie Yussuf. Executive members of the EBFSA that attended the function included Secretary Icenie Innis, Vice President, Clive Matthews and Treasurer, Noel Harry.
Journalist and Vice President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), Franklyn Wilson, who filled the role of Master of Ceremonies, lauded the commitment demonstrated by Ansa McAl even as he urged the participating teams to demonstrate the high level of discipline synonymous with the sport.
He noted that the prizes on offer may not be as lucrative as many would expect but promised that there would be improvements as the tournament develops. The organizers have also revealed that talks are currently ongoing to have a team of medical personnel from the Red Cross at every match.
Mr. Maikoo told the gathering that Stag promotes masculinity and since footballers emulate this concept, the product would gel with the expected performances. Ms. Yussuf endorsed her fellow executive’s concept while saying that her company is pleased to be a part of the resuscitation process. “My company would be helping 8 teams to excel in a game that everyone loves,” she said.
The tournament would be played during the day at the Timerhi Red Ground as well as the Providence ground. However, matches at the latter venue would be put on temporary hold since the facility is currently undergoing renovation works. Most of the double headers starts at 13:00hrs with the second match starting at 15:00hrs.
The organizers have also revealed that daily prizes would be at stake for the most magnificent goal scored among others. There would also be a prize on offer at the end of the championships for the player that scores the most goals.
