Guyana Fashion Weekend CEO Sonia Noel is leading a small delegation to the 13th International Fashion Fair in Ningbo, China from October 22.
This is one of the biggest fashion fairs in the world and for the first time the Caribbean will be represented.
The invitation came through the Foreign Affairs Ministry, which is also providing part sponsorship to make this show a reality. It is slated for staging at the Ningbo International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
The other designers are 2008 most promising designer Marcia DeSantos; Designers portfolio winner 2009 Ronella Woseley; and Chandani Ramnarain of the Apsara group.
As a prelude, the designers had a meeting with Charge D’affaires to China, Choo An Yin and were commend for their efforts to develop the local industry.
The charge said that she has been following the progress of Guyana Fashion Weekend and said that the organisers of the show in China are very excited to have representatives from the Caribbean for the first time.
Noel reports that the designers are also excited at being given the opportunity and are planning to make the best of it while making Guyana proud.
During the five-day exhibition there will be an international fashion designers’ conference.
Noel said, “China is known for a variety of fabric and it is a designer’s dream to be in fabric land.”
She added “the fashion in this part of the world is becoming more vibrant and aggressive and she’s elated to be doing this for Guyana. Meanwhile Guyana will also be represented in Santa Domingo for a two-day international fashion conference. There leaders of major fashion events in the Caribbean, South and Central America will be meeting to discuss the way forward for the industry in this hemisphere and collectively to be a force to recon with in the fashion world.
Some major players in the industry will be in attendance and Richard Young will be representing Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana for the event.
Ningbo is home to “Hong Band Tailors” — a group of people famous for garment production, the origin of the modern garment industry in China, and the place where the first piece of suit, and the first Sun Yat-sen’s uniform/ Chinese Tunic Suit were made and where the first book on suit tailoring was published.
