The Methodist circuit of Essequibo Coast, where Reverend Mark Piggott preached and the Methodist churches across the wider Caribbean were thrown into deep mourning, yesterday, after they learnt of Rev. Piggott’s death.
According to a police report Rev. Piggott met his unfortunate death after the car he was driving missed a turn on the Affiance Public Road and plunged into a canal on the western side.
While there were no eyewitnesses to the incident police said that people got to the scene after they heard a loud splash only to see the car PCC 4462 quickly submerging in the western canal.
By the time public spirited citizens were able to summon the police and a tractor to the scene to have the car pulled form the canal, Piggott was already dead.
After the car was pulled form the canal Piggott was still reportedly strapped down in his seat.
When this newspaper arrived at Rev. Piggott’s Ondeerneming home members of his church were already present and were offering sympathy to his wife, Barbara Piggott.
Mrs. Piggott, who was overwhelmed with grief, described her husband as very’ zealous and full of life’.
She recalled that on Monday, around 10:00 hours she last saw her husband who had informed her that he was visiting a friend at Airy Hall.
The visibly shaken woman said that she would later learn of her husband demise after one of her husband’s nephew from Georgetown called his mother to break the news to one of her sisters on the coast.
This sister in turn, called up Mrs Piggott yesterday morning and broke the sad news to her.
Mrs. Piggott said her husband grew up into the Methodist church after which he received extra training at the United Theological College of West Indies in Mona, Jamaica.
She said that her husband also obtained a diploma in marketing from the University of Guyana.
Reverend Piggott is survived by his wife and their two daughters, his 68-year-old mother and a sister.
Sister Leslyn Beaton, who also spoke to this newspaper, described Pastor Piggott as a very dedicated and committed individual.
