Army/Police ammo probe…
The Guyana Defence Force has dismissed the army lieutenant implicated in the suspected sale of a quantity of assault rifle ammunition.
A senior army official confirmed yesterday that the rank, who was a platoon commander, has been struck off strength.
However, the official said that he was dismissed for other matters for which disciplinary action was pending.
“He was on annual leave pending disciplinary action against him. The allegations (concerning the ammunition) had nothing to do with his dismissal.”
However, the official conceded that the reports that he gave a civilian the ammunition to sell might have “speeded up” his dismissal.
Army officials have still not located the disgraced rank. The allegations surfaced a few weeks ago after police arrested a Sophia resident, Charles Richards, in the vicinity of the Stabroek Market with 40 rounds of 7.62 x 39 ammunition under the seat of his motorcycle.
The ammunition is used in AK-47 and M-70 assault rifles.
Charles, of 119 “A” Field Sophia was jailed for two years and fined $50,000 for being in possession of ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence.
The accused had told Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson that he was in a financial crisis and accepted to transport the ammunition to an individual who said he would be waiting in the Stabroek Market area.
The defendant also claimed that he would have been paid $5,000 if the deal were successful.
Police had alleged that Charles had implicated the army lieutenant, whom he identified by name, and another man in the deal.
It is still unclear whether the ammunition is the property of the Guyana Defence Force.
