Guyana’s five-man team to the 9th Elite Caribbean Road Race Cycling Championships being hosted by the Barbados Cycling Union this weekend has expressed confidence of doing well in the 150km road race which is set for Sunday in the Land of the Flying Fish.
The time trial is set for Saturday but according to Team Manager Malcolm Sonoram his riders will not be officially taking part but some of them will use it to get a feel of the circuit which will also be used for what is expected to be a grueling Sunday event.
Apart from Kaieteur Cycle Club’s Alex Mendes and Continental Cycle Club’s Lear Nunes who will be riding for the first time at this event, the other riders of team Guyana have pedaled at this event before.
Team Captain Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, the most experienced member of the team speaking on behalf of his teammates said that the countries to watch at this event are Jamaica, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Trinidad and Tobago and the host nation.
Mc Kay, who has been doing well at the regional level over the years, recently returned from winning the Tour of Tobago division-two race and has reminded that he has taken on the best in the region and done well. He is expecting Team Guyana to do well on Sunday while acknowledging that the race will be very demanding. The other members of the team are Alonzo Greaves and Tony Simon.
Team members have been hard at training twice daily and have been competing in a number of races locally and should be well prepared for battle against the might of the region.
A total of 20-countries which includes Belize, Puerto Rico, St Lucia, Curaçao, French Guiana, Trinidad and Tobago, Guadeloupe, Bermuda, Jamaica, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Jamaica, and the United States Virgin Islands are expected to field teams.
The meet will begin on October 24 with the 90- and 150-kilometre road races for women and men, respectively, on the Spring Garden route.
Corporate support for the team which is funding their way to Barbados has come from Bissessar Shipping, Carib Foods, American Exchange Barber Shop, Gee Qu Barber shop, Raymond Perez Sr., Andrew King, Toucan Industries, Kevin Jeffrey, M&M Snackette, Mings Products & Services and Celebration Party Store.
