Suriname & Trinidad expected to compete
Building off their success in the Turks and Caicos tournament this past June, the Guyana Women’s Football programme is about to take a giant leap forward with the hosting of a four-team tournament in Guyana, December 18-20 2009.
Teams from Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana Overseas and the local ladies are expected to face off.
The overseas based Guyanese team comprises players playing at the semi-professional, College and University levels in North America. The local based team will comprise of players selected from the Women’s league currently underway.
It is the intention that having local and overseas Guyana teams, as many players as possible will be exposed to International competition and at the same time allow the coaching staff to select the best players from both teams to make the Guyana National team for the 2011 Women’s World Cup qualifying competition which is expected to kick off early next year.
Technical Director Mark Rodrigues and his coaching staff have finalised the overseas based roster for the upcoming Pre-World Cup Qualifying tournament.
The following players were selected from the overseas player pool:
Alison Heydorn, Alyssa Budhoo, Ashlee Savona, Ashley Rodrigues, Briana DeSouza, Brittany Persaud, Catherine Kobelka, Daria Owen, Jordana Phillips, Kayla DeSouza, Lindsay D’Andrade, Mariam El Masri, Morgan Lyall-Ashby, Nikkita Persaud, Olivia Gonsalves, Rehanna Murani, Tenyka Francique (GK), Vanessa DeSouza, Veronica DaSilva and Donna Carvalhal (Manager/Player).
Since the team’s participation in the Turks & Caicos tournament last June, the GFF’s Overseas Player Pool increased tremendously, and continues to grow monthly as word keeps spreading about the Programme’s launching and future plans.
President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Colin Klass, continues to be very instrumental and supportive administratively and financially working with his staff, which includes Vanessa Dickenson (President of the Women’s Association) and the business community in Guyana.
Technical Director Mark Rodrigues and Programme Director – Colin Baker said the will continue to work towards ensuring the future development and growth of the Women’s Programme for Guyana. All matches are expected to be played at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence and the Georgetown Cricket Club ground, Bourda.
