Sarwan returns tomorrow, Chanderpaul’s whereabouts unknown
By Sean Devers
Former West Indies under-19 player Assad Fudadin fell one short of his fifty while Test opener Sewnarine Chattergoon (44) and Ex-West Indies youth left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul (3-17) impressed in a rain-affected National practice match at Bourda yesterday.
Chattergoon and Fudadin got support from West Indies players Royston Crandon (29) and Travis Dowlin (27) as Steven Jacobs’ X1 made 211-6 in the 50 over game which was reduced to 35 overs due to a late start.
Former West Indies under-19 player Richard Ramdeen (27) and ODI left-hander Leon Johnson (20*) were the only batsmen to offer resistance as Johnson’s X1 struggled to 102-7 in 21.2 before rain halted the match giving Jacobs’ X1 victory by 70 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis system. Permaul got support from all-rounder Chris Barnwell who took 2-28.
Chattergoon and Dowlin added 80 for the first wicket in overcast conditions before Dowlin pulled off-spinner Deon Ferrier to deep mid-wicket and Barnwell (7) hit Delon Heyliger to deep square leg at 93-2.
Chattergoon then edged Heyliger to the Keeper 8 runs later while Royston Crandon lofted part-time spinner Gajanand Singh to long-on at 158-4.
Jacobs, a former West Indies under-19 Captain, missed a big swing at Ferrier and was stumped for 4 at 178-5 before Fudadin walked across his wicket to flick a full delivery from West Indies ‘A’ team pacer Brandon Bess and was leg before at 197-6.
Guyana under-19 Jonathon Foo finished unbeaten on 15 as Heyliger (2-27) and Ferrier (2-33) did the damage with the ball for Johnson’s X1 on a flat track and rough outfield.
When Johnson’s X1 began their reply Shemroy Barrington (1) edged Esuan Crandon to slip at 3-1 before West Indies under-19 selectee Trevon Griffith (13) was bowled with a short ball which kept low from Barnwell (2-28) after stroking the medium pacer for consecutive boundaries.
Ramdeen then top-edged a hook at Barnwell for the Keeper to hold the catch after he had smashed the previous ball out of the ground over forward square leg before Permaul took 3 quick wickets.
Permaul had Singh (6) caught at slip and Heyliger (0) taken on the mid-wicket boundary as 2 wickets fell at 63 while he got of wicketkeeper Derwin Christian (12) as a ball which bounced and turned was taken at slip to leave the score on 76-6.
Ferrier (13) seemed unlucky to be given caught at slip to a ball which appeared to hit the batsman’s forearm as he swept at Jacobs just before the rain ended the contest.
The Guyana team for the Guyana Cricket Board 20/20 Festival on Friday and Saturday and the 50 overs side for the Regional One-Day series, which begins on October 28, will be selected tomorrow after a 20/20 practice match at Everest.
A 40-overs practice game will be played today at Bourda and while Ramnaresh Sarwan, who played in Jamaica in a 15/15 Digicel sponsored competition is expected home tomorrow, both Manager Carl Moore and Coach Rabindranauth Seeram said they were unaware of Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s whereabouts.
The dependable left-hander who is advertised to play in the 20/20 Festival this week was supposed to arrive in Guyana over the weekend but failed to show up for yesterday’s practice match and Moore said that he was told the former Test Captain was to be in the country on Sunday but had no clue as to where he was and why he did not join the team yesterday.
“We are picking both teams on Thursday and while I am not sure about Shiv’s whereabouts, we are hoping that he is available for this weekend matches,” Seeram a former elegant First-Class batsman and now National selector, informed yesterday.
Guyana play the Leeward Islands in their opening Regional 50 over game at Enmore on October 28 before traveling to Albion on October 30 to face Barbados. Their last preliminary round game is against the West Indies under-19 side at Bourda on October 31.
Guyana, Jamaica, Barbados and a United Chargers team from the USA compete in a 20/20 cricket Festival under lights at The Guyana National Stadium on Friday and Saturday with a Chutney and Soca show expected to close off the 2-day fund raising event.
