Less than 24 hours after the Guyana Fire Service had a challenging experience in Regent Street where a fire destroyed five business places, the firemen were again called to fight another fire in the city, this time in Garnett Street, Newtown.
This recent blaze also adds to their list of fires to be investigated.
This time a fire of unknown origin, on Sunday evening, gutted a two-storey house at Garnett Street, leaving some ten persons homeless.
Reports are that the fire started some time around midnight on Sunday in the lower flat of the building which is located a few doors east of Vlissengen Road.
According to one of the occupants of the upper flat, Rabindra Monsar, he was roused by a noise in the lower flat of the building and upon checking he saw fire.
Monsar said earlier in the night he had left his home to purchase a few items for his children. “When I come home around nine I wake them up and give them the stuff and they went back to bed.”
He added that shortly after he retired there was this crackling sound.
“After I hear this cracking sound I went out on the verandah and then I open the door and went down stairs and I saw fire in the downstairs,” the man recalled.
He added that by that time, neighbours had already alerted the Guyana Fire Service. They then tried removing valuables from the upper flat of the building.
Monsar said that he was told by his nephew that the fire was first spotted under a bed.
The bottom flat was occupied by Monsar’s brother, the man’s wife and their two children. Monsar shared the upper flat with his wife and their four children.
In the aftermath of the fire, Monsar said that he is very pleased with the response by the Guyana Fire Service which was very prompt in their response. Because of their quick response none of the neighbouring houses were even scorched. The firemen did manage to confine the blaze to the one building.
Monsar was also grateful to his neighbours who supported the firemen.
He is now trying to assess his losses since all of his household articles have been destroyed.
He added that the property is owned by his parent who lives abroad.
