The local legal profession is being introduced to programmes aimed at modernisation and improved efficiency.
At least one new lawyer is clearly positioned at the right place and the right time to add her bit to the local legal profession.
With an academic reach beyond the accomplishments of an average lawyer coupled with the experience of being a very computer and business savvy woman of substance, Jacqueline Louella Graham, has entered the legal profession with an edge in the competitive environment of practice.
Jacqueline Louella Graham, 43, has proven that diligence, sacrifice and substance combined make for a portion of success. The mother of one and a recent graduate of the Hugh Wooding Law School was admitted to the Guyana Bar yesterday.
Retired Justice Donald Trotman, her cousin; and attorney at law Nigel Hughes in the company of Hubert Rodney, presented her petition before Madame Justice Dawn Gregory-Barnes, yesterday.
Encouraged by Professor Aubrey Bishop, Graham began reading for her law degree in 2004 at the University of Guyana and was the top performing student in the Department. “He taught the importance of fairness, diligence, excellence, integrity and good representation of clients’ interests” she fondly recalled.
She won the Chancellor’s Medal for the Best Graduating Law Student and was also the Best Third Year student. Jointly she also shared the Anne Blue 2005-2006 prize for the Best Second Year student.
After graduating from the University of Guyana, Graham commenced reading for the Legal Education Certificate at the Hugh Wooding Law School, Trinidad.
On October 3, this year, she was awarded the Legal Education Certificate by the Counsel of Legal Education and graduated with honours.
She was also awarded the Kissoon Family Prize and the Justice Mohamed prize for Best Performance in Legal Drafting and the Cameron and Shepherd’s Prize for Best Performance by a Guyanese Student for both Year 1 and 2 in Civil Procedure and Practice.
Graham who hails from Golden Grove with ambitions to one day be a Judge, attended the Cove-and-John Secondary School where she completed her CXC examinations. In 1992 she obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Management from the University of Guyana with distinction.
She also holds a Master’s Degree in Finance from the University of Manchester. Her research thesis “Impact of Rice Industry’s Collapse on Guyana’s Banking Sector 1995-2000″ gained her a distinction.
