Horseracing fans were treated to exhilarating action when the Norman Singh Memorial Turf Club staged a grand day of horseracing Sunday last. The event, which was staged in collaboration with the Customs Racing stable, had Turfites on their feet for the duration with eight races of exceptional quality.
Indeed the day’s activity lived up all the pre race hype from the onset when ‘The Message,’ competing out of the Colin Elcock stable displaying remarkable resilience to come out victorious in the feature event, the ‘C Class.’ The sturdy built stallion, competing over a distance of 1200m, proved that it is not only good at the longer distances but can also hold its own in a sprint.
Indeed, from the onset, the race had all the trimmings of a classic. Sweet Caramel, another pre-race favourite, promptly bolted out after the gates were raised. He held the lead for sometime until ‘The Message,’ piloted by Kevin Paul, quickly caught up with, and eventually overtook him. Thereafter, the eventual winner set a searing pace and despite a brief wobble, quickly recovered to pound out a six length victory down the homestretch to send supporting Turfites into a fit of euphoria. $350,000 was the winners take.
Great Memories of the Jagdeo stables was also in the winners’ row. After a relatively long lay off, the stallion made a definitive statement that it is back in contention with a blistering run down the homestretch that earned it the second place slot ahead of Jumbo Joy and the Gap.
The 1600m race between the three year olds was also a joy to behold when ‘Night Crescendo,’ competing out of the Crawford stables and ridden by Kevin Paul, galloped off with the first prize by a convincing five lengths to earn its owner the $250,000 and the Digicel trophy. ‘Top of the Line’ and ‘Prixie Fire’ were burnt into submission while ‘Zip a De Do Dah’ failed to make it to the finish.
In what might be considered the race of the day Mattarazzi, competing out of the Jagdeo stables continues to display excellent techniques, exacting revenge on the Gap with a classical run down the homestretch. He eventually won the ‘F Class’ event by a length. Its stablemate, ‘Fresh Prospect’ returned from a lengthy lay off to romp home in the third place while ‘Laura Lee in Flight’ cantered in fourth.
There was much excitement in the ‘Two Year’s Old,’ non winner’s race. Competing for a first prize of $180,000, ‘Miss Bounty,’ from the David Mackenzie stables and ridden by Kumar Singh, prevailed in a hotly contested event, ahead of ‘Little Spike’ and ‘De Gump’ in the 1100M match up. The winner also carted off the Guy Enterprise trophy.
Fans were also treated to a classical opener in the ‘G Class’ category. ‘Bad News,’ running for the Leary Robinson stable was indeed bad news for its opponents with another gate to pole win, in the1200m sprint. The stallion rearranged things and put ‘Alphabet’ in its proper order of second place, ahead of ‘Baby Boy’ and ‘Mystic.’ This is ‘Alphabet’s fifth win in six starts since its return from a prolonged hiatus. The winner cantered off with a purse of $150,000 donated by Republic Bank and H D Ramkisson.
‘Channel Boy’ of the Persaud stable, piloted by Prem Chandra then charted a winning course to cart off the ‘I and Lower’ class race over 1200m and the $130,000 first prize that went with it.
The Division 2 and 3 event over 1400m was contested in semi-darkness with ‘Clear Victory’ defying the odds to take the honours and the $120,000 first prize. ‘Channel Boy’ and ‘Rum Till I Die’ completed the podium spots.
‘President Junior’ of the D Manroop stables wore royal colours and eventually took the top honours in the ‘Unclassified Division 3’ race to take home the $90,000 first prize in the 1200M race. Romeo, Gray and Baby Gold had to settle for the miniature portion of the winnings.
Jockey Kumar Singh was once again adjudged top jockey while Tribhowan Jagdeo took the top trainer award. He received the Ramesh Sunich trophy, compliments of the Trophy Stall of Bourda Market.
Over 60 horses contested for the 3.5M dollars on offer while some 60 horses participated.
The next race meet is scheduled for The Ryan Crawford Memorial Turf Club on November 1st.
