A truck, GLL 8059, laden with groceries was yesterday seized by the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) enforcement officials and taken to Customs House for inspection.
According to the owner who gave her name only as Angela, she bought the goods from Brazil and was stopped along the Linden highway by the GRA officials who then ordered the truck to the Main Street office.
The woman said she paid duties on the items at the Lethem/Guyana border and presented those documents to the officials.
At Customs House, a senior Customs Officer said it is customary for the enforcement arm to carry out such exercises, but acknowledged that it is unusual for the unloading to take place on Sunday.
He explained that there was nothing special about this incident.
The truck was emptied of all its contents which included rice, peas, milk and other groceries.
When Kaieteur News sought clarification about the reason for searching the truck although duties were paid, the officer said that they needed to verify that the correct amount of duty was paid.
He explained that when this is verified the truck will be released to its owner or if additional duties are to be paid, such will have to be done pending the release of the vehicle.
The owner of the truck could be seen pacing up and down as the officers carried out their inspection. She said while she has been making these trips to Brazil for a while now it is the first time that her items were stopped and searched. The woman claimed that she normally supplies groceries to businesses in Bartica.
