BK International Western Tigers clawed their way to championship honours in grand style when they softened Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United 3-2 to win the 6th edition of the Mackeson/English/Kashif & Shanghai Futsal championship at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Saturday night.
The Tigers, backed by an animated and vociferous crowd sprang their way to victory against a game and tough Alpha unit in what was a crowd pleasing climax to another successful and incident free tournament.
Taking the third place game were Flamingo who hammered Uprising 6-3, Seon Peters netting a hat-trick (20, 35, 36), Leon ‘Zambuly’ Yaw hit in a double (18, 32) with the other scored by Deon Allen in the 31st minute. Omali Nassy (25, 30) tucked in a brace for Uprising while Daniel Favourite had opened the scoring for the losers in the 9th minute.
Banks DIH were trounced by North East in the Exhibition tournament final 1-0 while in other matches played, Prestige Barber Shop defeated Sweet Point 3-1 and Ansa McAl Trading humbled Upper level Barber Shop, 4-1.
Saturday night’s main event though, lived up to its pre game hype as both teams looked the part and were very focused on the task before hand, that of winning the top prize of $500,000. The Tigers created chances very early and as has been the norm with them for quite a long time, failed to finish consistently.
Their {Western Tigers} most popular player Devon Millington who was attracting at times three Alpha Players in their bid to keep him out of the reckoning, struck with eight minutes on the clock for the go ahead goal.
While Alpha, led by Shawn Bishop, were keeping up with the Tigers in terms of intensity and movement of the ball they were not being allowed to let off shots close to the Tigers goal area. But that did not deter them from pressing ahead.
With the introduction of Quincy Madramootoo, it added some fillip to Alpha’s offensive plan as he started to takes shots from outside. That stance paid off for them as 15 minutes on, Madramootoo’s shot from down town caught Western’s goalkeeper Travis Bess by surprise as it settled in the nets.
The score remained unchanged going into the halftime break. Second half play started as the first with Western creating numerous chances but not making them count. While the players were consistently messing up, the fans were getting agitated as the time on the clock ticked away.
Both teams scored in the 36th minute to add further pressure to the game, fans were now standing and cheering either side as they went in search of the winner.
With two minutes to game time, a Delon Fraser scud missile halfway into Alpha’s half on the left side exploded into the back of the nets as it flew past the outstretched hands of Alpha goalie, Ronson Williams.
Any thoughts of rebounding from this stage for Alpha were nullified by the Tigers who did well to hold onto the ball with more efficiency than their opponents. When the final whistle was blown, celebrations began for the winners who were joined by their faithful band of supporters, a well deserved win.
The organisers have said that the presentation of prizes will be done shortly but took the time to thank their sponsors, Ansa Mc Al Trading through its Mackeson brand, the teams who participated and all the fans who supported.
