With National defending champions Young Warriors being knocked out at the Berbice semi-finals, a new Neal & Massy 1st division 40-overs National champion will be crowned tonight at the Guyana National Stadium.
In an all Berbice final, Berbice champions Rose Hall Town Windies Sports Bar face-off with runners-up Albion from 14:0hrs today and a keen contest is anticipated under lights.
Albion got past City side Malteenoes in the National semi-finals at Albion while RHTWSB beat Essequibo winners North Essequibo in the other semi at Anna Regina in Region 2.
While staging the match at Albion (where a fundraising 20/20 competition is to be played today) would have guaranteed a larger crowd than what is anticipated today at Providence, the players will have the opportunity of playing at Guyana’s best cricket facility and competing under lights as many of them in both teams prepare for Regional cricket later this month.
Albion who whipped Bermine in the Berbice zone semi-final on their road to the National play-off will be hoping to avenge their loss to RHTWSB at Canje in the Berbice final and enterprising cricket is anticipated from both Corentyne teams. RHTWSB beat Young Warriors in the county semis.
Led by their pair of Test left-handers Sewnarine Chattergoon and Narsingh Deonarine who both batted brilliantly when Berbcie mauled Demerara at the Stadium in the El Dorado inter-county 50-overs final this month, Albion has a balanced team and a strong spin-attack.
The Chattergoon siblings will hope to give to give their team a solid foundation on what should be a flat track and quick outfield while the in-form Deonarine, Jonathon Foo, Ranga Latchana, Veerasammy Permaul and Davindra Bishoo will hope to contribute with the bat for Albion.
Sewnarine Chattergoon’s leg-spin, left-arm Permaul, leg-spinner Bishoo and off-spinner Deonarine should do the bulk of the bowling for Albion.
RHTWSB will bank on the batting of their only senior West Indies player Royston Crandon, former West Indies under-19 left-hander Assad Fudadin, Khemraj Mahadeo, Eon Hooper, Delbert Hicks and the pugnacious Esaun Crandon to carry their batting while Esuan Crandon, his off-spinning brother Royston, Fudadin and left-arm spinner Ravi Narine will hope for a good day with the ball today to help their team to victory.
The action starts at 14:00hrs and the teams are expected to be met by the sponsor before the start of the game.
Admission to the ground and car parking in the Stadium is free.
