As well as disruptive elements
Diwali celebrations were in full swing last evening when thousands, both young and old and of every race and religion, converged on the sea walls to catch a glimpse of the Diwali Motorcade on its way to the La Bonne Intention Community Ground.
And many more lined the route and flocked the LBI Community Centre Ground where the motorcade ended.
The floats represented many different Madirs from along the East Coast of Demerara, as well as Georgetown.
The parade was however noticeably smaller than previous years, but some floats seemed to have outdone those of last year’s motorcade.
Some families spread sheets on the grass mound in the vicinity of Sheriff Street and the East Demerara Highway, some sat on the sea wall while others decided to take the view from their vehicles on the other side of the Rupert Craig Highway.
Young children had trampolines to wile the time, while the adults took a drink and kept an eye on them.
Floats came from as close as Station Street Kitty Mandir in Georgetown to as far as the Rosignol Veadic Mandir, Berbice.
Most floats sat atop canter trucks, while the more elaborate ones were astride 18-wheelers.
All floats depicted Hindu gods and goddesses sitting among there subjects, inside lilies on altars and were represented by young East Indian boys and girls.
Apart from the many lights, and colourful costumes, some floats were supported by dancers and singers accompanied by the beats of the tasa drums.
All who participated in the motorcade were dressed in colourful Indian wear; saris gararahs, dhorkas, and the like.
They were all adorned with ceremonial jewellery and make-up.
On the down side, disruptive elements took to the streets harassing some of the onlookers that congregated at the head of Sheriff Street. They hurled explosives such as ‘Squibs’, ‘Whistling Thunder’ and ‘Channa Bomb’ into the crowd.
The delinquents were reigning freely among innocent bystanders, aiming the projectiles mainly at near by traffic police officers and into the midst of the crowd, and were up to press time not apprehended by the police.
