The taxi driver who was found with the abandoned car at Stewartville Old Road on Wednesday has reportedly admitted to being a part of the gang which robbed Bartica businessman Nezam Kassim on Tuesday.
And in a strange twist, the mother of Kassim’s personal driver found a black bag in her yard. In the bag was $2 million that is believed to be a part of the money stolen from Kassim.
The woman was cleaning the yard when she made the discovery. At the time her son was in police custody assisting with the investigations.
On Tuesday, the businessman was robbed of $9.5 M after four gunmen stuck him up on the Good Hope Public Road, East Bank Essequibo. The man and his regular taxi driver had stopped for a coffee break at his driver’s home when the men allegedly struck.
Several shots were fired after the men helped themselves to the money.
The men made good their escape in a white car which was waiting. That car was found abandoned shortly after, in Stewartville.
Initially the taxi driver had told investigators that he was hijacked by the men who carried out the robbery. When asked about his car being in Stewartville the man had stated that he panicked and went to inform a relative of what happened.
However his story later changed after further questioning by investigators. The man said himself along with the suspects who hails from the Riverview and Albouystown area planned the robbery but their plan somehow failed when they tried to abandon the car which is registered to one of them.
Reports are that another suspect who was taken into custody shortly after the robbery provided investigators with the names of the others who were a part of the robbery.
As a result, one other suspect was arrested some time early yesterday morning at a location in the city.
This newspaper has since been informed that the persons who are said to be involved in the robbery are no strangers to the police since they may all have pending charges before the courts but are out on bail.
