…as T&HD vessel sinks trawler
It was drama on the Atlantic Ocean about 23: 45hrs Wednesday when a Transport and Harbours Department passenger vessel MV Barima crashed into the right side of trawler, Regina 2, while it was en route to the North West district.
All seven persons aboard the trawler (Regina 2) managed to climb aboard the MV Barima before their vessel sank into the murky waters of the Atlantic Ocean 20 minutes later. “The boat went under the waters at exactly 12 ‘o’ clock, said one witness,” Lennox Clarke. The seven did not save any of their belongings.
Those saved were trawler captain Junior George, Sean Primo, Ahmad Khan, Rudolph Powley, Sheldon and John Wickham, and Timol Wilson. Primo sustained a cut above his left eye during the ordeal.
Apparently unaware of hitting the launch the trawler according to the passengers went on its way. Seven persons were onboard as water gushed into the trawler.
One passenger said, “After the big boat hit we, it looked like it was going to drive away. So even though we boat started to take in water we had to drive behind them, go up alongside and make them collect us one by one.” He added, “Is left they would ah left us and we would ah gone down with the boat.” The trawler is owned by Praeep Abdul but he could not be reached for a comment yesterday.
One trawler crew member alleged that the trawler was well lit but that the MV Barima was not. “We see the Barima coming towards us and we started to signal but nobody ain’t respond; then it hit we.”
Reports are that passengers boarded the Barima at the Kingston wharf. The vessel departed at14:00hrs en route to the North West District. The rescued trawler crew were up to yesterday mid morning still on the Barima headed to the North West.
When contacted, a staff from the Maritime office said that the Superintendent was out but confirmed that the MV Barima left Port Georgetown several hours later than usual.
When asked if he heard of the vessel being involved in an accident he said “I hear somebody in the office say it went in some accident but the Superintendent is the best man to give that information.”
