President of the Guyana Teachers Union, Colwyn King, was released on $100,000 station bail yesterday as police continue to investigate allegations that he sexually assaulted a teenaged girl.
King was released late yesterday evening after police investigators took him to be examined by a private doctor.
Police have taken several statements and a decision on possible charges is likely next week.
The police reportedly collected statements from the various locations that King allegedly visited with the teen.
Meanwhile, the hierarchy of the Guyana Teachers’ Union yesterday made it clear that the members were standing by King.
During a press conference, GTU General Secretary, Coretta Mc Donald, expressed the view that the allegations against King were fabricated.
“We believe that Colwin King is a man of integrity. He has been there championing the cause of teachers and children; what has been said are mere allegations.”
“You can only be found guilty upon the pronouncement of the court. We want the public to know that as members of the teachers union we do not believe what was peddled in the air. He has been cooperating with the police.
“The same thing he has been saying to the police he has told us…He was at his doctor in the company of the police. If there was evidence charges would have already been laid.”
In a brief telephone interview before the press conference, Mc Donald told Kaieteur News that King had stated that he did not know the teen who was making the allegations against him.
“We’re absolutely certain that he’s not part of that. Someone’s being mischievous.”
The GTU President was arrested yesterday after a 15-year-old girl alleged that King had sexual intercourse with her at a hotel after buying her a meal.
The incident allegedly occurred on October 6.
According to the allegations, on the night in question King saw the girl, a Sophia resident, walking along Sheriff Street, in the vicinity of the seawalls.
It is alleged that he drove up alongside and enquired of her well-being and allegedly offered to get her something to eat, as she was hungry.
Police sources said that the girl claimed that she was at home alone in Sophia when the area was hit by a power outage.
According to the teen, she decided to take a walk because she was afraid to be at home alone in the darkness.
The allegations are that the teen was taken to purchase food and then to Shaikan Hotel, on Princes Street, where there was some sexual activity.
The girl was subsequently picked up by a police patrol on Sheriff Street while wandering.
She was escorted to the East La Penitence Police Station where she made the allegation against King.
Kaieteur News understands that she was subsequently taken to the hospital for a medical examination, where it was established that she was sexually active.
On Wednesday, both King and the teen had a confrontation at the East La Penitence police station, where the teen allegedly identified him.
