Safraz XI were once again in winners row, this time defeating Shieldstown, in the first of the two quarter-final matches, when play in the Mike’s Pharmacy 15 overs, countrywide, round hand, softball competition continued at Shieldstown Ground, Berbice, Sunday morning last.
Safraz XI won the toss and elected to bat, amassing 173-5 in their 15 overs. Richard Latiff top scored with a blistering 57 off 19 balls with support from Randolph Johnson (36). Shieldstown started their innings on a positive note scoring 22 runs in the first over.
The tide began to turn upon the introduction of Arjune Persaud. He finished with figures of 5-16 from 3 overs to eventually restrict Shieldstown to 65 off 8.5 overs. Kishore Persaud (15) top scored for the losers while Tyrone Persaud was the top bowler with 2-16 from 3 overs. Safraz XI next match is on hold, awaiting the results of the other zones matches.
Meanwhile, Wolf’s Warriors embarrassed Shattazville XI by 71 runs in their match at the Leonora Primary School Ground. The eventual winners won the toss and batted, scoring 155 all out in 13.5 overs. They then routed Shattazville for 84 in 11.3 overs.
Rangers SC XI then made light work of Superstreet XI by 8 wickets after the latter team won the toss and elected to bat. They compiled 85 all out in 12.4 overs with Bharat Kumar (20) taking the batting honours. Rangers SC XI then erased the total with relative ease (88-2 in 7 overs). In matches played in the Berbice Zone, Whim Nationals defeated Water World XI by 8 wickets. The losing team returned later in the day to defeat Port Mourant XI by 29 runs. In quarter-finals matches played in the Over 40 category for the Wellman trophy, Industry Super Kings made light work of Berbice XI by 5 wickets. The losers compiled 85 all out in13.2 overs while the winners responded with a score of 86 – 5.
Matches were also played at the Demerara Cricket Club Ground, Queenstown. In the first, Trophy Stall Masters got a walkover from Essequibo XI, while in the second Shattaville Masters defeated Floodlight XI by 14 runs.
Shattaville XI batted first and scored 157 all out in 24 overs. Floodlight XI started their innings aggressively and at one point were cruising at 103 – 3.
However, a series of ill advised strokes and poor application saw Floodlight X1 losing wickets at regular intervals.
They eventually succumbed for 143 in 25 overs. Rangers Masters XI also registered a win, defeating Savage XI by 4 wickets in their match at the Leonora Primary School Ground.
Meanwhile, several teams have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Female category for the Well woman Trophy. The qualifying teams in the U15 category for the KidiCare Trophy have also been named.
Quarter-finals matches commence within the next week. The qualifying teams are: Female teams from Linden– Coomaka Queens and Sunrise Girls; Berbice – Heavenly Queens and Lancaster Girls; Leguan – Island Girls, Essequibo Coast and Essequibo Queens. West Demerara: Uitvlugt Queens and Ruimzeight Girls.
In the U-15 Male category: West Demerara, Uitvlugt and Zeeburg have qualified while in Linden – Coomaka Youths and Genesis “A” Youths have also qualified. Playing out of Berbice, Shieldstown and Bush Lot have qualified while on the East Coast Demerara, Triumph Youths and Success XI are the qualifying teams.
Meanwhile, teams wishing to enter in The Carib Beer National Softball Tournament organized by the Guyana Softball League in collaboration with The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport are asked to contact the following persons in their respective areas. The tournament commences on October 18, next.
