Fire of unknown origin yesterday destroyed part of the building that once housed the Old Guyana Match Company Limited at 25 Vreed-en-Hoop, West Bank Demerara.
The building now owned by Demerara Distillers Limited for more than ten years was not in use but was under security guard.
RK Security Guard Service guards, Michelle Williams and Corinne Brooks, were on location at the time. Williams said that both she and Brooks did a routine check about the premises about 15:00hrs and all was well.
“At about 3 o’ clock we see smoke coming from the middle building and we call Leonora Fire Station but nobody ain’t answer,” the woman said. Their last resort was to summon the police, who upon arrival, summoned the Guyana Fire Service in the city.
No one was injured and save for some old filing cabinets and remnants of deteriorated machinery nothing else was destroyed.
The building was out of use for more than ten years according to one DDL official at the scene.
Firemen had managed to extinguish the flames before any damage to the other parts of the derelict building.
