The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport along with the National Sport Commission in collaboration with the Regional Democratic Council of Region #3 successfully hosted a Day of Interaction on Sunday last at the Goed Fortuin Community Centre Ground, West Bank Demerara.
This event was the second in a series of interactive community sports extravaganza planned and organized by the National Sports Commission.
The event attracted over 1100 participants from West Demerara and East Bank Essequibo with participants coming from villages such as Wales, Goed Fortuin, Parika, Crane and Cornelia Ida and Stewartville to name a few.
The participants were a genuine representation of the Guyanese population with all ethnic groups duly represented.
The activity was part of the National Sports Commission’s programme to actively engage communities across the country to highlight the importance of exercise and a healthy lifestyle, to promote a spirit of peace, unity and cooperation among communities and to encourage communities to make use of the many Community grounds, playfields and other sport facilities available to them.
On hand for the event were Director of Sports Mr. Neil Kumar and Region Three Chairman Mr. Julius Faber along with Members from the Region #3 Council.
Both Kumar and Faber when addressing the participants expressed appreciation for the large turnout which was seen as an indication of the interest of the communities in the development of not only sports but closer community bonds and a deeper understanding of each other.
The Football Games were played at the playfield on the public road at Goed Fortuin. Goed Fortuin youths won their semi-final game and they played Crane in an exciting final. They narrowly defeated Crane ‘A’ Team. The score at whistle was Goed Fortuin 3 and Crane 2.
Table Tennis:
In the open category Kennard Sahadeo captured the winners trophy while Sahadeo Ramkeraat was second with Khemraj Thakur third.
While in the junior category Shamar Williams from Goed Fortuin was the winner with Danelle Samaroo second followed by Allister Parks third.
Draughts:
The Draughts Competition was indeed highly competitive. National player Jairam tied with Khemraj Pooranlall for the first place. While the veteran Haroon Bacchus played tough to take the beautiful third prize trophy.
Dominoes:
Goed Fortuin captured the winner’s trophy while the Community Policing Group Team from West Demerara came in second.
Circle Tennis:
In a keen struggle Bagotsville defeated Crane. After the heavy downpour at 5:00 pm, the girls were fully pumped up for their final. Bagotsville took first stake and they scored 56 runs in bad light. However, Crane were restricted to a mere 35 runs.
Volleyball:
Goed Fortuin and Crane played in the finals. Goed Fortuin were really good on the home turf, as they defeated Crane convincingly.
Cricket:
Both Male and Female Cricket matches were keenly contested. Twenty one teams contested in the softball matches. In the female finals Meten-Meer-Zorg defeated Ruimzeight by four runs.
In heavy conditions after the rain Meten-Meer-Zorg took first strike and scored 38 runs while Ruimzeight only managed 33 runs.
In the male softball match Goed Fortuin Public Road defeated Goed Fortuin Scheme by one run. Batting first Goed Fortuin Public road made 42 runs and then dismissed the Scheme team for 41 runs.
At the end of the highly successful day’s event the Regional Chairman Julius Faber, Vice Chairman Mann Persaud and Regional Executive Officer Davidson joined with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport officials and made the presentations to the winning teams.
