A fine allround performance by Abdool Salim guided Good Success SC to victory over Sans Souci SC in the final of the Sterling Products Ltd 40 overs cricket competition on Saturday at the Wakenaam Community Centre Ground in Good Success.
In a match which was reduced to 35 overs due to early morning showers, the home team won the toss and elected to bat first in front of a fair size crowd and lost Iftikar Mohamed (8) in the second over with the score on 10.
Abdool Salim then joined Wazir Khan and took the score to 54 before Khan (17) had his wood work disturbed by Ceon Venture in the 10th over.
Komal Persaud then entered the fray and together with Salim posted an entertaining 3rd wicket stand of 80 before Persaud departed at 134 in the 20th over for 43 which included three fours and two sixes.
He faced 30 deliveries. Salim who played some lovely shots both sides of the wicket brought up his fifty with a four through mid on.
The host then lost three quick wickets to be at 150-6 in 25 overs before Imran Khan and Salim posted 30 runs for the seventh wicket stand. Salim who hit six fours was then caught and bowled by former national U-15 pacer Oyono Sampson for 68 while off spinner Gurnauth Khemraj accounted for Khan (15) in the 32 over.
Good Success then lost their last two wickets for 6 runs to be all out for 195 in 34.2 overs. Sampson took 3-29 off 7 overs while Khemraj captured 3-26 off 16.2 overs and Wayne Osborne 2-21 from 7 overs.
Sans Souci began their reply nicely with Osborne and Heera Sukhram posting 53 in 8 overs before Osborne who hit three sixes and one four was trapped LBW by Wazeer Mohamed for 28.
Satnarine Sahadeo joined Sukram and took the score to 68 before Sukram departed for 10. Sahadeo and Vickram Ramnarine added 21 runs for the 3rd wicket before the latter was bowled by Imran Khan for 10 in the 18th over.
Nazeer Mohamed then trapped Sahadeo leg before for 25 (2×4,1×6) as the visitors slipped 97-4 in 20 overs. It became 103-5 when Varounie Sasepaul (6) was LBW to Khan in the 22nd over.
Jaggernauth Manbodh (12) and Oyono Sampson (14) tried to repair the damage with a 23 run 6th wicket partnership but Sampson who hit Salim over wide long on for 6 departed two deliveries later as he attempted to repeat the shot and was caught just inside the boundry with the score on 126.
Salim then accounted for Gurnauth Khemraj (11) and Jermaine Wolf (13) while Wazir Mohamed had Ceon Venture (11) stumped as Sans Souci were bowled out for 175 in 32.3 overs handing victory to the home team by 20 runs.
Salim was the pick of the bowlers for the winners with 5-33 off 7 overs while Wazeer Mohamed had 2-24 from 7 overs. Good Success collected the winning trophy and Sans Souci the runner up prize while Salim received the man-of-the-match award.
At the presentation ceremony, secretary of the Wakenaam Cricket Committee Zaheer Mohamed thanked the sponsor for coming on board. He also said that Sterling Products Ltd has pledged to continue sponsoring cricket on the island.
Mohamed congratulated both teams for reaching the final and thanked the crowd for their support.
