Defending champions New Amsterdam United (NAU) retained the Coca Cola Senior Football Championship in Berbice following a comprehensive 5-0 win over home team Scottsburg United on the weekend.
Tournament leading goal scorer Adrian ‘Garnett’ Adams slammed in a hat-trick to end the season with a whopping 18 goals from 9 matches.
He was on target in the 10th, 30th & 60th minutes while his younger sibling, Leonardo supported with one in the 47th and Kelvin Joseph in the 76th.
The win for NAU takes them to an unassailable 25 points and they also ended as the only unbeaten team with eight wins from their nine matches with one draw.
Retaining this championship caps a fine year for the top team in the Ancient County this year.
They also won the Cheddi B. Jagan Memorial knockout tournament.
At the Mahaicony CDC ground, home team Mahaicony United rebounded from trailing 0-1 to hammer Strike Force United 3-1. Strike Force had jumped into the lead compliments of Lynton McKay’s 25th minute goal.
But their ability to strike was nullified by Mahaicony in the second half as the home team took control of proceedings. Carl Fraser equalized in the 62nd with a well taken shot past custodian Gaston George.
Leroy Halley (65 & 76) then took over and nailed a double to seal the win for the hosts.
The battle is now on for the second place between Real Union and Cougars who are on 18 points each. Cougars are however tipped to take the runner-up spot since they still have two matches to play while Real Union have exhausted their nine matches, ending with six wins and 3 losses.
Cougars (6 wins & 1 loss) will be aiming to take full points in their remaining games against Strike Force United and Scottsburg United.
