Guyana’s President, Bharrat Jagdeo, on Monday denied once more that he is interested in a third term.
Responding to reporters’ questions, the Head of State during a press conference at the Liliendaal International Conference Centre on Monday, made it clear that he has spoken about the issue “hundreds” of times and his answer still stands.
Several times over the past months, the President has denied that he is interested in holding that position again.
With two consecutive terms under his belt, Jagdeo is barred under Guyana’s constitution to be President again unless opposition parties agree to amend constitutional laws to allow him another term.
It was only as recent as August that the President brushed aside suggestions that he would seek a third term as Head of State despite a recent, controversial opinion poll that indicated more than half of the population would support such a move.
The official had said then that a third term was mere speculations.
His constitutional two-term ends in 2011.
Jagdeo was appointed Head of State in August 1999 after then president Janet Jagan stepped down due to health reasons.
He contested and won the 2001 and 2006 general elections as the PPP presidential candidate.
Recently, a group calling itself the Guyanese Coalition For Jagdeo Third Term has been campaigning for a third term for President Jagdeo by distributing flyers and buttons.
However, General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party, Donald Ramotar, denied that his party was in any way involved. He described any such moves as nonsense.
