Says Coach, William Howard
By Edison Jefford
William Howard spewed more confidence in the male Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) cyclists than in the females but that was only understandable given the imbalance of attention that is given to Women’s Sports generally in Guyana.
The National Cycling Coach who will be travelling to Suriname early tomorrow morning with the six-member cycling team and Guyana contingent, told Kaieteur Sport yesterday that the cyclists have a 90 percent chance at winning.
“I would say that our chances are about 90 percent in both races, but we still do not know how the females will perform because it is their first tour overseas. But our chances are, I would say, reasonable,” Howard strongly believed.
The male team includes junior champions at both national and schools’ level Christopher Holder, Geron Williams, Enzo Mathews and Chris Persaud while the female team include Naomi Singh and Mericka Dick from Berbice.
The males will ride in the 10km Team Time Trials and 60km Road Race with the females competing in the 8km Team Time Trials and 40km Road Race. The Cycling Competition of the IGG event is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
“They’re all prepared because they have been competing throughout the year. Regardless of what competition they bring, we’re mentally prepared; we have set motive and it’s just to do our best when we get there,” Howard stated.
The National Coach informed that the general feeling around the local contingent is about confidence and optimism. He said that was one of the things that stood out at the meeting with Director of Sport, Neil Kumar last Friday.
“I think the team as a whole is extremely confident. At least those at the Sports Hall were confident and clearly on a high,” he observed at the meeting that Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Alfred King also attended.
The Rising Stars Cycling Club official told this newspaper that he is aware of the abilities of the six cyclists selected to represent Guyana, and as such, it is merely a matter of going out according to their plan this weekend in Suriname.
