This year’s national Diwali motorcade which began at several Praants nationwide last week culminates Friday with the largest showcase of floats in the history of the event.
As a major corporate sponsor, yesterday, Digicel inked a three-year deal valued in excess of $6M for the Diwali and other Hindu celebrations.
Digicel Chief Executive Officer, Gregory Dean, said that the partnership was signed with the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha in the interest of the development of culture and entertainment in Guyana.
Signing for the Hindu Dharmic Sabha were Treasurer Savitrie Sukhai and General Secretary Chandra Gajraj while Dean did the honours for his company.
Dean said that the gesture is in keeping with the company’s ever growing efforts to support entertainment, community and cultural activities on the local shores. “The proposal that came to us from the Dharmic Sabha represented a good opportunity for us to get involved; and we have.”
The monies, he said, would be used as sponsorship for Diwali, Phagwah, Indian arrival and other cultural events at the National Cultural Centre.
He is optimistic that there will be other events during the three-year period in keeping with the deal signed. He noted, too, that the deal gives certainty that the organisation has his company’s support.
Thanking Digicel for taking on the partnership Gajaraj said it demonstrates Digicel’s recognition of the work of her organisation.
Noting that it is the largest Hindu organization with seven Praants and many affiliations nationwide she said the deal will greatly help in promoting their activities and programmes.
Sukhai dubbed the event a historic milestone for Guyana with Digicel being the exclusive mobile service provider for the event.
She said, too, that this year the largest motorcade to date slated for Friday, will feature about 24 floats in small, large and commercial categories.
The motorcade is scheduled to move off from the Campbellville Mandir at 19:30hrs and will end at the La Bonne Intention, LBI, ground for a grand cultural showcase and prizegiving ceremony.
Gajraj said the monies will also be used for other events such as the Phagwah Mela and Bazaar, Naya Zamana and Kala Utsav an event that promotes young artistes in various Indian art forms.
“An arrangement like this is long term,” for his company Dean said.
